The residents of El Charco explode: "We cannot continue to endure what we are suffering"

They denounce the consequences that the "massification and lack of control" of nightlife in the area is leaving and question the "disinterest" of the City Council in the face of their complaints.

Neighbors of the streets adjacent to El Charco de San Ginés have decided to start collecting signatures and make public the situation they are experiencing, after a long time of complaints to the City Council without having obtained a response. "We cannot continue to endure what we are suffering," they denounce in a statement, in which they warn of the consequences that "the massification and lack of control of nightlife during weekends is generating, which is concentrated in the pedestrian area of César Manrique Avenue."

In their press release, residents of Blas Curbelo, El Salto, Franchy Roca and Jacinto Borges streets clarify that their complaint is not against the hotel and commercial activity. "On the contrary, we believe that it could have a negative impact on the restaurants in the area with a clientele that seeks to enjoy the gastronomic offer in a unique space. In addition, we know that some do everything possible to control their spaces. However, the situation is becoming unsustainable and will end up affecting the environment economically, since some businesses will see their income reduced due to uncontrolled incivility if urgent measures are not taken," they warn.

"Our complaint is against incivility, lack of respect, the dirt it generates; for the situations of insecurity and tension that we neighbors are forced to suffer every Saturday. Elderly people, children or sick people live in our houses and we want to be able to be calm in our homes without having to see how groups of young people gather in front of our homes to do binge drinking, consume narcotics, have sex with total abandon or do their physiological needs. Faced with this, we find the aggravating factor of being insulted, or in the worst case, being exposed to aggressive verbal confrontations if a neighbor criticizes their behavior," they say.

"Our complaint is against the lack of attention from the City Council and those responsible for security in this city. We have denounced this situation on numerous occasions and have not obtained a response beyond the lack of municipal resources to deal with it," they criticize. For this reason, they explain that they wanted to publicly reiterate their complaints and claims, since they consider that the local Administration "must provide protection to those who request mediation and resolution of conflicts," since these "not only affect non-compliance with regulations, but also the right to rest, security and health of its neighbors."

However, they question that after "a long time asking for measures to resolve the matter", they have only found "the disinterest of those who have municipal responsibility, which leaves us with an absolute feeling of helplessness." Despite this, they maintain that they will not give up on their demands and will start collecting signatures, "to seek the support of all the residents of Arrecife who want to show solidarity and who understand that public officials cannot turn their backs on those who rightly demand that they be heard and that a solution be sought."
