The El Reducto beach, the main one in the city of Arrecife, has maintained the blue flag distinction despite being closed for swimming for almost half a year due to contamination from a sewage spill. The name of this space appears in the List of Beaches Awarded the Blue Flag between 2026 and 2027, which includes six beaches in Lanzarote.

The wastewater leaks from an old collector forced Health to establish the bathing prohibition in El Reducto until the origin of the discharges was located and a solution was found. After months of searching, the origin was located on El Greco street. The Consortium and Canal Gestión carried out works to repair that source of leaks and informed Health that the incident was resolved.

The beach took almost six months to reopen for bathing, becoming the beach in Lanzarote that has maintained the prohibition of bathing in its waters for the longest time due to contamination. Finally, it reopened for bathing this past Holy Week.

Next to El Reducto, the blue flag will also fly in Playa Grande, Matagorda, Pila de la Barrilla, Los Pocillos, the four in Tías; as well as in Playa Blanca, in Yaiza, another area that usually has problems with sewage leaks.
