The parish of San Ginés Obispo in Arrecife at 11:00 in the morning began with the first of the events corresponding to Good Friday with the procession of the Crucified Lord through the streets of Arrecife in which the 'Via Crucis' is performed, one of the devotions of greatest fervor of Good Friday.
This moment recalls the journey of Jesus Christ carrying the cross to reach Mount Calvary before being crucified. The 'Via Crucis' consists of 14 scenes of the Passion of Christ or stations that the faithful travel each of them along with several prayers, generally of penance and repentance, to meditate on various incidents that represent.
After the procession and already inside the church, the sermon of the 'Seven Words' was carried out, which is the name given to the seven last words that Jesus said during his crucifixion, before dying to give his life for the salvation of the sins of the human being and that have been written in the gospels.
Later, at 7:30 p.m., with the three naves of the temple full and in the Plaza de Las Palmas, the events of Good Friday began with the commemoration of the 'Passion and Death of Jesus'. This is the only day of the year that the Catholic Church does not celebrate the Eucharist and the entire celebration is of contemplation, recollection, silence and prayer.
The first reading is from the book of Isaiah, the second from the letter to the Hebrews, thus giving way to the Holy Gospel according to Saint John, becoming the central axis of the celebration with the narration of the 'Passion and Death of the Lord'. This reading is presided over by the celebrating priest Juan Carlos Medina, parish priest of San Ginés, and includes the participation of two parishioners, one in the role of narrator and the other as a representative of the people.
Another moment of recollection is when the 'Adoration of the Holy Cross' takes place, where the parishioners approach and bow their heads before the Crucified. The events of this celebration end with the distribution of Holy Communion reserved from the previous day 'Holy Thursday' consecrated in the 'Last Supper', the songs for this celebration were enlivened by the 'Parish Choir', directed by the Religion teacher José Juan Umpierrez.
At about 9:00 p.m., the Great Procession of the Holy Burial began, headed by the 30 members of the music band 'La Unión Musical de Lanzarote', directed by Professor Pepe Artiles, followed by the image of the 'Christ Lying Down'. A few steps away, the image of Our Lady of Sorrows, very sheltered by the celebrating priests and the parishioners, many of them very excited, knelt in her path, this procession has a wider route through the main streets of the city.
At 10:00 p.m., the 'Fervorín de la Dolorosa' and procession of the 'Solitude' took place with the image of Our Lady of Sorrows around the church square, thus ending the events of Good Friday.
