Firefighters in the drill at the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital

The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, held this Tuesday a fire drill in the Laboratory area. More than 150 professionals from the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center (CECOES) 1-1-2, the Lanzarote Fire Consortium and the Arrecife Local Police participated in this exercise. In addition, grade students of Emergencies from the Zonzamas Institute who have acted as users, as well as the emergency teams of the Management and the professionals of the Lanzarote hospital center also took part in this activity.

The emergency drill began on the second floor of the Hospital, after the detection of a chemical fire in the laboratory, caused by a short circuit. The fire warning by a worker activated the self-protection plan of the hospital center.

The emergency teams of Molina Orosa try, at first, to extinguish and contain the fire in the simulation exercise and evacuate the only person who is supposedly injured, a laboratory technician who is transferred to the hospital Emergency service for evaluation and care. Likewise, this team is responsible in the first minutes of confining the fire behind a containment door and evacuating about 70 people, including users and workers, from the affected area, pending the arrival of external aid.

The firefighters of the Consortium appeared at the hospital facilities and deployed the necessary equipment to extinguish the alleged fire, while the Arrecife Local Police assumes the tasks of facilitating and directing the access of external aid to the Hospital.

The self-protection plan, in practice

This drill joins other practical exercises that have been carried out throughout 2022 at the Molina Orosa Hospital and the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote to put into practice and evaluate the self-protection plan in order to offer safe care to the population.

The manager of the Health Services of the Lanzarote Health Area, José Luis Aparicio, and the medical director, Carlos García, thank all the users, students and professionals who participated and collaborated in the realization of this practice and convey their congratulations to the Security service of the hospital center that has directed and coordinated an exercise that allows updating knowledge in terms of security and emergencies.
