The Molina Orosa Hospital improves equipment for early detection of breast cancer

The Radiology service incorporates new state-of-the-art equipment and a portable X-ray machine for the care of COVID-19 patients

New equipment for early detection of breast cancer at the Molina Orosa Hospital

The Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has incorporated a new state-of-the-art ultrasound machine into the Breast Unit of the Radiology service, which provides greater and better resolution to the diagnostic tests of the unit.

The medical and technical team consider that this new ultrasound imaging system has a more faithful approach and improves penetration in the ultrasound. Likewise, it is noted that it is more agile for diagnosis due to its greater contrast and resolution, which avoids complementary tests and is more comfortable for the patient.

This more modern version of the ultrasound machine incorporates improvements to the service that allow to clearly differentiate a solid lesion or a cyst and offers more information to detail whether it is a malignant or benign lesion due to the advances incorporated by the new device. This equipment, the radiologists emphasize, will speed up the work and offer a better service.

The Breast Unit of Doctor José Molina Orosa works to advance early diagnosis in breast cancer and precisely this new equipment for diagnosis will allow to identify a greater number of cases.

New equipment

This Unit provides service every day of the week, given the volume of work. Thus, while in the morning hours they work with specialized patients, afternoons and Saturdays are reserved to attend to women who are within the Early Detection Program of the Government of the Canary Islands. During 2020, a total of 3,556 tests were performed for this program.

Likewise, the Radiology service has improved its diagnostic imaging equipment with the acquisition of another high-end ultrasound machine of great precision and sharpness that is characterized by its ability to increase the depth of the test significantly. The new device incorporates various automated analysis and measurement tools that achieve greater precision and speed of examinations and will be dedicated to abdominal, thyroid, musculoskeletal, venous and arterial explorations and ultrasounds of neonates.

On the other hand, the center's management decided to incorporate a portable X-ray machine to the service due to the high demand for tests caused by COVID-19 admissions during the month of January. This new laptop is currently dedicated exclusively to patients admitted for coronavirus in the ward and in the Intensive Care Unit, as it facilitates the work of technicians and provides greater agility to the tests.

The mobile equipment has a screen that allows to obtain a preview or instant image next to the patient's bed and confirm if it is valid for diagnosis. The doctors highlight the high quality of the images and the improvement of the features that facilitate the process and examination times.
