The Mercedes Medina Díaz association has proceeded with the delivery of scholarships in its XV Edition academic year 2026-27. In this edition, 52 applications have been submitted, with 16 beneficiaries selected and two more students placed on reserve.
The most requested universities are: ULL, ULPGC, Granada, Salamanca, and Autónoma de Madrid, and the most in-demand degrees correspond to: Medicine, Law, Physiotherapy, Physics, Translation and Interpretation, Fine Arts, Physics, Psychology, Business Administration, Biomedical Engineering, Criminology, Primary Education, and Economics.
The honorary president Maura Palarea delivered a fraternal greeting and thanks via video to all those present at the Casa de La Cultura “Agustín de la Hoz”. Two scholarship students, representing their peers, spoke: Marisol Mane Djalo, a 2nd-year Translation and Interpretation student, shared her experience as a scholarship recipient and her efforts to complete her degree. Alejandro Rebollido, a former student of CEIP Mercedes Medina Díaz currently in his 3rd year of Physiotherapy at ULPGC, expressed his gratitude for being a beneficiary of this aid.
In this XV Edition, it was revealed how the map of needs has increased in the less favored social strata due to the high cost of rent on the island and in university areas, where it is difficult to find accommodation, shared flats, or other types of stays.
The MMD Association, along with sponsoring companies, has made an effort so that the largest possible number of university students can reach the faculties. The total amount each scholarship recipient receives amounts to 3,600 euros distributed over the nine months of the school year. The total amount for this 2026-27 academic year amounts to almost 60,000 euros. The AMMD Scholarships are the only ones delivered in advance in August before each student departs for their university district.
The delivery ceremony was attended by the beneficiary students, families, association members, a large business representation from CICAR, Taba Control, Graciplus, Fundación Líneas Romero, Spar, Grupo TSG, who collaborated by awarding two scholarships, and Bodegas Vega de Yuco. Among the authorities present were Ascensión Toledo, Minister of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa; Carmen Pellón, Insular Director of Education of Lanzarote; Echedey Eugenio, deputy mayor of Arrecife, and Jesús Martín, director of the CEP.
The president of the AMMD Juan Cruz Sepúlveda closed the event, making a brief reflection on the 15 years of the Association.
