The Arrecife City Council has resolved the contest called for the election of the sculpture that will pay tribute to all the sailors of Arrecife and, particularly, to the fishermen who perished in the Cruz del Mar in 1978. A total of five proposals have been submitted to the contest, of which finally, the jury in charge of evaluating them, has selected the sculpture called "The Light that Guides Us" as the winning work of the contest. The author is the master Juan Brito Martín, a resident of the municipality of Arrecife, 92 years old, and with an extensive curriculum in the artistic field.
"The Light that Guides Us" is the name given to the proposed lighthouse, seven and a half meters high, flanked by two anchors that, according to its author, "provides a sense of belonging." In addition, seven norae engraved with the names of the seven sailors who died in the Cruz del Mar surround the base of the lighthouse, to which an eighth is added in tribute to all the sailors of the city.
A compass rose tops the upper part of the lighthouse and, inside it, a space is reserved that will be used to house the image of the patron saint of sailors, as reported by the Arrecife City Council through a statement.
At this time, and after the resolution of this contest, the City Council is immersed in the procedure of studying the materialization and installation of the work in the optimal place in the city. In this sense, everything indicates that, given the tribute that is intended to be offered with its installation, as well as the circumstance that many of those who died in the Cruz del Mar were residents of the seafaring neighborhood of Valterra, finally its location will be in the vicinity of said neighborhood.
