The door of the Arrecife City Council has been the scene this Friday of a protest concentration in favor of the figure of Mercedes Medina, who "is going to be evicted from her school after 30 years". And it is that, three decades after the educational center located in Altavista received the name of this teacher, the same, now converted into an institute, will be called "Institute in Altavista", according to what has been transferred from the Mercedes Medina Díaz Association.
Members of this association have been part of the act that has been held at the doors of the capital Consistory, in which former students of the educational center and teachers have also been present. Likewise, the one who was the mayor of Arrecife 30 years ago, José María Espino, the then Education inspector in Lanzarote, Fernando Curbelo, and the one who was the first director of the Mercedes Medina school, Luis Morales, participated in it.
Precisely, April 23 marked 30 years since the school received the name of Mercedes Medina and, with this concentration, they also wanted to commemorate this anniversary. And it is that, according to the association that bears the name of the teacher, the City Council "refused" to celebrate this anniversary. A fact that they consider a "dereliction of duties" on the part of the Consistory and a "contempt" towards the figure of Mercedes Medina.
In addition, they indicate that just this Friday, the Arrecife plenary session took note of the proposal of the current School Council of the educational center to change the name of the same, a change that they criticize has been "allowed" by the Consistory.
