Six years in prison and a fine of more than 1.8 million euros. That is the penalty requested by the prosecutor for Mithat M.M., Jacobo S.G. and Daniel R.H. The three are accused of a crime against public health for trying to introduce 587 kilograms of hashish into Lanzarote, valued at more than 900,000 euros. The trial will take place this Tuesday in the Provincial Court of Las Palmas.
The events that will be resolved there took place on the morning of July 26, 2012, when, according to the indictment that the prosecutor has filed with the Court, Mithat M.M. and Jacobo S.G. arrived at the pier of the Arrecife Fishing School dock in a recreational boat. The owner of the boat, the third defendant, Daniel R.I., was waiting for them there in a vehicle with the trailer for the boat.
On board the ship were found 587 kilograms of hashish, of which, the writing explains, 23.55 had an average richness of 17 percent in THC, 504 kilograms of 16 percent in THC and 59 kilograms with an average richness of 15.5 percent.
"Total disregard for health"
"The seized substance was intended for subsequent distribution to third parties on the island of Lanzarote, with total disregard for the individual and collective health of third parties," the Public Prosecutor's Office points out. According to this writing, those almost 600 kilograms of hashish could reach "the value of 904,782 euros in the illicit market".
For the Prosecutor's Office, these facts constitute a "crime against public health in its modality of substances that do not cause serious damage to health." For this reason, it requests a prison sentence of 6 years for the three defendants and a fine of more than 1.8 million euros, in addition to having to bear the costs of the judicial procedure.
Of the three defendants, two have criminal records. In the case of Mithat M.M., he was sentenced for driving without a license to 30 days of work for the benefit of the community, in addition to having been deprived of liberty for this reason between July 26, 2012 and December 20 of the same year. For his part, Jacobo S.G. was sentenced to 8 months in prison for a crime of resistance and 1 year and 6 months for another crime of injury. In both cases, these records are not "computable for the purposes of recidivism", as they have already been convicted for them.
