The victims of the La Palma volcano have started collecting signatures to promote a Canary Island law against volcanic catastrophes, popularly known as the Volcano Law. The initiative, which originated in Los Llanos de Aridane, is now coming to Lanzarote to seek the support of the people of Lanzarote.
The signatures will be collected between July 12 and 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in front of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. "Now it will be the turn of the Island of Volcanoes," the people of La Palma have advanced.
At the moment, they have already obtained 6,000 supports, but the minimum required for this Popular Legislative Initiative to be debated in the Parliament of the Canary Islands must be 15,000 people.
The mobilization throughout the Archipelago, now reaching the eastern province, aims to bring to the Canary Chamber a debate in which it is possible to regulate, as far as possible, the measures to be adopted in a volcanic catastrophe. In this way, the demographic, sociological, housing, labor, economic and environmental challenge is guaranteed and responded to, and "the resettlement and permanence of those affected in their environment" is promoted.
The proposed text for this law against volcanic catastrophes can be read in full on the website about this ILP.
