Children and adults can now read the children's story 'The best friend in the world. Honey', published on the cover of the municipal website www.yaiza.es, which narrates and illustrates the story of an abandoned hunting dog, who then finds an adoption home through the Yaiza Animal Shelter, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about animal welfare and responsible ownership of dogs and cats.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, explains that "we have commissioned the writer Mayte Pozo to create this publication because children's literature is an unbeatable vehicle to bring or draw reality closer to the youngest, in this case also, helping to raise awareness about the problem of abandonment and animal abuse".
The story was presented last December by the councilor responsible for the Animal Protection Area of Yaiza, Águeda Cedrés, and the author, Mayte Pozo, at the open days of the Yaiza Animal Shelter, in the presence of residents of the municipality, municipal workers of the Area and volunteers of the Doggys del Sur protectora who collaborate altruistically in the care of the pets cared for there.
"We think it is important not only to raise reflections on the responsible ownership of dogs and cats, but also that citizens know what is the protocol we carry out since we locate a lost or abandoned animal and who are the people and entities committed to the cause, including municipal workers, Local Police and veterinarians, and of course, we want to value the commitment of families who generously offer their home to welcome animals," adds the councilor.
The story also addresses the importance of keeping cat colonies healthy and sterilized. The City Council carries out periodic sterilization campaigns to avoid the overpopulation of cats that can even threaten other species.
Mayte Pozo has developed other creative works commissioned by the municipality, including the didactic units of the archaeological site of San Marcial de Rubicón, the environmental resources Yaiza and its coastline and the didactic material on Las Salinas de Janubio and the popular poet Víctor Fernández Gopar, this last document to promote knowledge of the life and work of 'El Salinero' and the scientific, landscape and heritage value of Janubio.
