The Citizen Assembly for the Right to Housing in Lanzarote calls this Sunday for a day of cultural, artisanal, and social activities in José Ramírez Cerdá Park in Arrecife. Open to the entire population, it will take place from morning to afternoon and will combine coexistence with the demand for solutions to the housing emergency.
The call comes one week after the first gatherings. During these days, six open assemblies have been held, and contributions have been received from neighbors, businesses, and people from different social and cultural backgrounds.
The increase in rents and the scarcity of affordable housing are the main concerns shared by those who come to the park.
Support for families at risk of eviction
One of the commitments adopted was to support families threatened with eviction, especially when minors, the elderly, or vulnerable individuals are involved. In compliance with that agreement, members of the Assembly accompanied a family facing the possible loss of their home on the morning of Friday, October 9.
The accompaniment was carried out peacefully and, under the housing decree, was halted. The Assembly considers it essential "to offer a listening ear and support so that no one has to face the threat of losing their home alone."
The movement defines itself as citizen, non-partisan, and horizontal. Its meetings are open to anyone who wants to share experiences, voice concerns, or present proposals. Agreements are made collectively and recorded in public minutes. The Assembly maintains its independence and bases its operation on deliberation and individual participation.
During this first week, people of different ages, professions, and backgrounds have participated, including teachers, healthcare professionals, lawyers, business owners, artists, young people, pensioners, and families affected by housing access difficulties.
Neighbors and establishments in the center of Arrecife have collaborated with coffee, food, access to restrooms, and other resources. The Assembly thanks them for these contributions and the cultural support received. It highlights the promotion by Alba Boek and, as explained, the gesture of Vera Fauna in facilitating participants in the protest to express their demands and display their banners during their performance at Arrecife en Vivo.
The Assembly demands concrete measures to facilitate affordable rents, assist people threatened with eviction, and guarantee dignified housing alternatives for those in vulnerable situations. It also requests institutional coordination, channels for dialogue, and respect for the rights of assembly, expression, and peaceful protest.
Sunday's event will continue this work through coexistence and care for the park. The Assembly invites the population of Arrecife and all of Lanzarote to come, learn about their demands, and participate in an open space for citizen encounter and organization for the right to decent housing.
