Storm 'Claudia': Arrecife activates a 200-person device and suspends outdoor activities

The Arrecife City Council held a coordination meeting this Wednesday with all the heads of departments of the Arrecife City Council to check the preventive monitoring of the indications reflected in the Arrecife Municipal Emergency Plan, which was activated this past Tuesday starting at 7:00 AM.

The AEMET has raised the alert to orange level for rain, as well as winds, rough seas, and storms that could affect the island of Lanzarote from 00:00 hours this Wednesday, the 12th, although the intensity of the rain, due to heavy showers, according to the AEMET, is expected tomorrow Thursday during the morningMayor Yonathan de León presided over this PEMU meeting, which was also attended by the Councilor for Security and Emergencies, Kevin Cortés, the Councilor for Mobility and Transport, Mario González Altube, the Councilor for Beaches and Environment, Davinia Déniz, among other council members of the Municipal Government, along with the deputy chief commissioner of the Local Police of Arrecife, José Antonio Lasso Tabares, and the technical coordinator of PEMU, Police Officer Marcos Antonio GalindoIn addition, and as the mayor announced at this meeting, after receiving information from the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, the suspension of face-to-face academic activities has been decreed, also in the educational centers of Lanzarote and La GraciosaFor its part, the mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, will sign this Wednesday the decree suspending outdoor activities in municipal facilities, as one of the alerts for strong winds has been activated. This municipal suspension will remain in effect until the alerts for storm *Claudia* are deactivated.

For several days, the Department of Public Works has been carrying out work, with the help of municipal workers and machinery, to channel the ravines north of the Argana Alta neighborhood. These ravines carry water from the slopes of Montaña Mina, Maneje, and Zonzomas during periods of heavy rainfall, which cause flooding in the city center of Arrecife, as it is at sea level and was founded as a city by the tide. Due to its orographic location, the capital of Lanzarote becomes the natural outlet for these ravines, the risks of which are classified in the sensitive areas of the PEMU.

The Canary Islands Government, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, updates the pre-alert situation for coastal phenomena throughout the archipelago, starting at 00:00 hours today, tomorrow, November 12. This decision is made taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena Risks (PEFMA).
