Canary Islands continues immersed in a period of meteorological instability marked by rain and storms. Between last Sunday and Monday alone, 4,915 lightning strikes on land or in the ocean of the archipelago were recorded. Most of the impacts were registered on the western islands. However, this instability will reach the eastern islands in the coming days.
The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has activated the pre-alert situation in Lanzarote, La Graciosa, and the rest of the islands of the archipelago starting at 10:00 AM this Wednesday due to rain and storms.
Yellow alerts for rain and storms
This decision is made based on the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which has activated two yellow alerts, one for this Tuesday and another for this Wednesday, for rain and storms on all islands. Heavy or very heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected, which could be locally persistent, cloudy skies, a slight decrease in temperatures, and moderate easterly winds tending to ease.
The instability affecting the archipelago persists, with locally heavy or very heavy rainfall, which could reach 20 millimeters of rain per hour in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. It may also be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Off the western islands and Gran Canaria, the eastern islands could accumulate up to 15 millimeters of rain per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the atmospheric dynamics could favor convection stalling in specific locations throughout the day. However, the Canary Islands government points out the "uncertainty" that the islands face regarding the location, intensity, or persistence of precipitation.
Despite the arrival of rain, Aemet's forecast for this quarter, comprising November, December, and January, estimates a very high probability (70%) that it will be warmer than normal, although cold periods, with snow and frost, may occur.
