Around 223 people committed suicide in the Canary Islands during the past year 2023. This is reflected in the data provisional published this past Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The majority of the people who took their own lives between January and December of last year, 77%, were men. The methods used by men to commit suicide are usually more effective and that is why they account for a higher percentage in the number of deaths by suicide or self-inflicted injuries.
Specifically, by age, 18 Canarian adolescents and young people between the ages of 15 and 29 have taken their own lives throughout the past year; 29 young adults between 30 and 39 years old; 50 adults between 40 and 49 years old; and 54 deaths between 50 and 59 years old; as well as 44 between 60 and 69 years old; while between 70 and 79 years old, eleven people have taken their own lives; in addition to another eight people between 80 and 89 years old.
