A cleaning and awareness campaign made it possible to remove some 150 tires, 10 fish traps and other debris from the seabed of El Charco de San Ginés last Saturday, where even a flowerpot from street furniture that had been thrown into the water was found.
The initiative was promoted by the Apedechar Association, with the support of the Marlines Canoeing Club, the House of Fear, Gorec Emergencias, restaurants in the area, owners of barges and feluccas and the collaboration of the Arrecife City Council, through the Departments of Cleaning and Environment.
According to the Consistory, "the enormous presence of tires in these seabeds originates from the fact that they are used as defenses or mooring marks by the small boats that anchor inside the Charco de San Ginés", and "with the force of the sea or storms, they usually come off the anchors or chafing gears to which they are attached, and are left adrift".
The mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez, has thanked these groups and volunteers for their collaboration on behalf of the City Council and has asked all citizens for "a greater environmental commitment, to prevent the sea that surrounds the capital and all of Lanzarote from becoming a garbage dump".
