The MIR Association Spain (AME) has requested the Directorate General for Professional Planning of the Ministry of Health to investigate possible irregularities that would be occurring in the Canary Islands Health Service, dependent on the Government of the Canary Islands, related to the assignment of functions and supervision of resident doctors during the regional strike.

As AME detailed in a statement, residents "would be moved during on-call shifts to areas different from those initially assigned," as well as "used to cover absences of staff specialists," which poses the risk that residents assume "responsibilities beyond their competencies and level of supervision."

This organization has also recalled that the participation of residents in healthcare activities, including continuous care, is "an essential part of their specialized training" and that said activity must be developed within the framework established by the training program.

"The condition of the resident is simultaneously labor and training. Therefore, the healthcare needs of the center must be compatible with the teaching objectives and with the supervision guarantees inherent in the Specialized Health Training system," it asserted.

Faced with this scenario, AME has requested the Teaching Unit to remind the different services and healthcare managers "of the applicable regulations for the organization, supervision, and progressive responsibility of training specialists." Likewise, it has demanded that the appropriate measures be taken to "guarantee their effective compliance."

The organization has also warned that, should this situation persist, it will bring the facts to the attention of the "competent teaching, labor, and administrative bodies," so that the necessary measures are taken to alleviate this irregularity.
