Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman evicted from her Madrid home on December 23 and a symbol of the demands to improve access to housing, passed away this Wednesday at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in the capital, according to sources from the Tenants' Union.

Maricarmen was taken to the hospital immediately after being expelled from the home where she had lived for the past seven decades, located in Madrid's Retiro district.

Her health condition was delicate, as her circle had warned, although the woman was able to send several messages from the hospital to thank the support received and call for social mobilization.

Her case, in fact, triggered a wave of protests and led the Government to promote two decrees on housing that the Congress of Deputies did not validate last Friday, in a vote that ultimately led President Pedro Sánchez to call early general elections.

These decrees are now back on the table, after the Council of Ministers approved them this past Tuesday. The Executive is confident in approving at least one of them in the Permanent Deputation, which assumes the role of the Legislature during this interim period.
