Marcelo V. Barreto Concepción has passed away, at the age of 79 years, a prominent figure in the educational and social sphere in the Canary Islands, and a person very linked to the municipality of Haría.
Born on September 1, 1946, he spent his childhood with his mother, Andrea, and his four siblings in the La Cruz (La Jabonera) neighborhood, in Haría. From a young age, he showed an early intellectual and social restlessness. Together with several young people from the municipality—including Juan Barreto, Juan Betancort, Andrés Casanova, and Policarpo—and with Enrique Dorta as parish priest, he entered the Seminary of Tafira, beginning a formative journey that would mark his educational vocation
Subsequently, he continued his History studies at the University of La Laguna, developing intense academic and union activity. He actively participated in the mobilizations of unemployed Canary teachers, contributing decisively to most of the teaching staff finally being hired in the Canary Islands. Likewise, he took part in the creation of the Canary Workers' Union in Lanzarote, demonstrating his commitment to the defense of labor and social rights.
He worked as a professor and later as an Inspector of Education, being assigned first to Fuerteventura and later to Tenerife, where he developed a distinguished professional career in the service of public education.
In the cultural and social sphere, he was **the town crier for the San Juan de Haría festivals in 1977, a** recognition of his connection to the municipality and his involvement in community life. The wake will take place this Tuesday in Tenerife. As was his wish, on the 20th his ashes will be transferred to Lanzarote to be deposited in the cemetery of Haría, where he will rest definitively
