Some 800 people have returned to the streets of Arrecife this Sunday, October 4, to demonstrate in defense of the right to housing and against housing precarity. The protest, held throughout the morning, arises as a direct response to the collapse this past Friday of the housing decree-law promoted by the Government, after being rejected in Congress with the votes against from the Partido Popular, Vox, and Junts per Catalunya.

The march began on Avenida Marítima, from where the tide of demonstrators advanced, passing through emblematic points of the capital such as the emblematic surroundings of Charco de San Ginés and the central Calle Real.

During the protest, led by banners with slogans such as "For housing: Towards a general strike!", attendees made visible the serious crisis of access to rental housing that the island is suffering. Among the most striking messages on posters and banners made by the residents themselves, slogans such as "Your Airbnb was my home", "Studio 40m² for rent for €1,500", "Housing is a right, not a business" or "Being a landlord is not a profession" could be read.

Throughout the march, the demonstrators unanimously chanted slogans such as "Where are they, they can't be seen, the rental homes?", "What's happening, what's happening, we don't have a home!" or "If they evict one, they evict us all!".

Social tension due to the lack of long-term residential rentals in Lanzarote and the proliferation of holiday homes continues to increase, aggravated by the political blockade of state regulations registered this Friday, which has driven social platforms and citizens to take to the streets en masse.
