Lanzarote registered more than 750 complaints of gender violence during 2022

Lanzarote registered 555 reports of gender violence during the past year. The data released this Friday by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary places the island as the fourth in the Canary archipelago in which the most reports have been filed. Ahead of it are Gran Canaria (5,022 reports), Tenerife (4,332) and Fuerteventura (741).

In the vast majority of cases, injury offenses and mistreatment were reported. In the rest of the islands, the reports were distributed as follows: in El Hierro, 20; in La Gomera, 41; in La Palma 387.

Reports of gender violence registered in the judicial bodies of the Canary Islands throughout 2022 increased by 8.4% compared to the previous year. The increase was lower than the national average (11.8%). Between 2020 and 2021, the number of reports of gender violence had grown in the archipelago by 0.9%, but between 2021 and 2022 the increase was 8.4%.

In total, 9,757 reports were registered in the courts of the archipelago. According to official data, Canarias registered a rate of 88.2 women victims of gender violence per 10,000 women last year, the fourth highest in the State after the Balearic Islands (110.3), Murcia (103.4) and the Valencian Community (95.6).

The Observatory report offers more data: of the 9,721 women victims of violence in the Canary Islands, 7,573 were Spanish (26 of them minors) and 2,148 were foreign. Regarding the people prosecuted, last year 2,927 sat on the bench in the Canary Islands for sexist crimes, with 92.1% being convicted. 2,089 were Spanish citizens and 607 were foreigners.
