Lanzarote's institutions also support the mobilizations for Women's Day

The Cabildo and the Arrecife City Council have sent separate statements showing their support for the mobilizations that will be carried out for International Women's Day, institutional support that adds to the one already expressed by the Teguise City Council.

The first institution of the island, through the area of Social Welfare, will join the events organized by the Forum Against Gender Violence, of which this Corporation is a part, as well as the feminist platforms and the seven municipalities of the island. In this way, and as a symbolic action to commemorate the fight for gender equality, the facade of the Cabildo will be illuminated with violet color during the night of March 7 and 8. A banner will also be displayed at the headquarters of the Department of Social Welfare, located on the Rambla Medular of Arrecife.

On the other hand, the Cabildo will participate, as a collaborator, in the demonstration called by the Forum Against Gender Violence, scheduled for Saturday, March 10, starting at 11.30 am, in Arrecife. It will depart from the Four Corners towards Calle León y Castillo, passing through Otilia Díaz, Plaza de San Ginés and returning along Calle Inspector Luís Martín to La Plazuela.

The councilor responsible for the area, Maite Corujo, has invited citizens to participate in a demonstration that will feature performances by the batucada Chimbay, the singer Peggy Martínez and the murga afilarmónica los Tabletúos. "It is important that everyone goes out to the streets to demand the empowerment of women, gender equality and the construction of a society balanced in rights and guarantees," said the councilor.

Arrecife encourages its workers to concentrate

For its part, the Arrecife City Council has approved in the plenary session this Wednesday the support for the mobilizations called by the UGT and Comisiones Obreras unions for this March 8 under the slogan 'If we stop, the world stops' through a motion presented by Somos Lanzarote, PSOE, Ganemos Lanzarote and CC.

The City Council also encourages the workers of the institution to join the concentration "as a further measure of awareness about the situation of discrimination against women in the workplace and in society in general." In addition, as a sign of support, the San José Castle will be illuminated from 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday until midnight from Thursday to Friday, in addition to displaying a banner with the violet ribbon throughout the month

"There cannot be a truly democratic society if we are not able to eliminate sexist behaviors and attitudes that threaten more than half of the population. Sexism, the result of the most rancid and harmful patriarchy for women, extends to all areas, from the family, social and labor to the most cruel of manifestations such as gender violence that is exercised against women," said the Councilor for Equality, Victoria Sande.

Approval of a Labor Equality Law

It was also stated in the motion that "the importance of dedication to the values of gender equality, solidarity and respect for the other should be highlighted, requesting that a subject be included in all compulsory stages of education that addresses all these values, in addition to requesting the parliamentary groups and representatives in the Congress of Deputies "the presentation and approval of a Labor Equality Law".

"A society free of sexism is our goal and one of our hallmarks. Therefore, on the occasion of the commemoration of March 8, we are once again positioning ourselves for a true social change that involves a profound structural transformation in which women are protagonists and co-participants of everything. Tomorrow we will express our commitment to women, to the defense of their rights and to equality policies as an instrument to advance towards a society in which women are owners and exercise from their freedom the protagonism of their own lives," added Sande.

The majority of the workers of the Chamber of Commerce will go on strike

The majority of the workforce of the Chamber of Commerce has shown its support for the manifesto of the feminist strike on March 8 through a statement announcing that they will go on strike "in an act of sorority with all those workers who for any circumstance cannot do so".

"We do not suffer any difference in treatment within this public law corporation or salary inequalities, quite the opposite, we feel supported in this adhesion and we want to make it public because of what the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote represents for companies," they wanted to make clear, pointing out that what they want is "to be an example and reference for other SMEs and corporations, with the aim of promoting good business practices, improving working conditions, normalizing work-life balance and defending the rights and dignity of all workers."

"We want to make visible the value of women and demand equal rights, from our recognized situation of privilege compared to so many women who this Thursday will not be able to raise their voices," they said.

Concentrations and tributes for Women's Day

For this 8-M, there are two concentrations called in Arrecife, one by the unions, which will take place in Calle Real from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and another organized by the Feminist Platform March 8 Lanzarote, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the Parque Ramírez Cerdá, where Tiemar will locate "a space of fraternity" and an information table from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For its part, the PP will carry out an act of recognition to the women of sailors to commemorate this International Working Women's Day, which will take place at 12 noon in the Casa del Miedo.

On Saturday, there will be a demonstration called by the Forum Against Gender Violence, which will start at 11.30 am from the Four Corners towards Calle Real, passing through Otilia Díaz, Plaza de San Ginés and returning along Calle Inspector Luís Martín to La Plazuela.
