In Lanzarote, Philosophy matters

Several institutes on the island have developed the Philosophy Week, to commemorate the world day of this discipline and highlight its functionality

Initiative carried out in several institutes of Lanzarote during Philosophy Week

On the occasion of the World Philosophy Day - which is celebrated every year on November 17 - different institutes on the island have developed a Philosophy Week, which has had a special program of activities with the aim of commemorating, and above all, giving relevance to this discipline.

In this way, ESO, Baccalaureate and BSP students, adults from the institutes Agustín Espinosa (Arrecife), César Manrique (Arrecife) and Tinajo have carried out work to "teach how to philosophize, to think, to doubt", as explained by Isabel Barandarián, professor of the aforementioned subject at the IES Agustín Espinosa and member of the Canary Association of Philosophy Professors (ÁGORA).

"The defense of Philosophy continues to be a daily job to avoid uncritical societies prone to dogmatism", added Barragán, this being the idea that students have transmitted through their actions.

 

Activities carried out

In the case of Agustín Espinosa, the members have made a video in which they explain what Philosophy is and why it is important in everyday life, in addition to other actions such as making murals with various philosophical questions and making a radio episode about the subject on Chinija Radio - within the program "School Radios" -.

For their part, the IES César Manrique and Tinajo have also developed similar activities, all of them under the idea that in Lanzarote #PhilosophyMatters, a hashtag that has functioned as the motto of this initiative.
