King Harald V of Norway, 89 years old and who has been hospitalized since Tuesday at the Hospiten Sur University Hospital in Tenerife (Spain) due to an infection, was discharged this Thursday, reported the Royal House of this Nordic country.

"His Majesty the King has responded well to treatment and has recovered. He will be discharged from the hospital today," this institution stated in a communiqué.

The Royal House reported that the Norwegian monarch and his wife, Queen Sonia, will continue their vacation in Tenerife, where they had arrived a few days ago.

"For the moment, no decision has been made regarding the return date. The king's personal doctor will stay a few days in Tenerife to monitor his progress," stated the Royal House, which will provide more information about his health next Monday, unless there are changes before then.

The monarch's doctor, Bjørn Bendz, had flown to Tenerife yesterday to examine him.

"The king's general condition is good and he is responding well to treatment. The infection stems from a skin infection in one of his legs. The king will remain hospitalized for a few more days under observation and to receive further treatment," Bendz had noted the day before in an official statement.

The Norwegian monarch had already been hospitalized two years ago during his winter vacation in Malaysia due to an infection.

Six days later he was transferred to his country in a medicalized plane and, once in Oslo, a pacemaker was implanted.

Europe's oldest monarch has experienced various health problems in recent years, with several hospitalizations for different types of infections. Harald V had a bladder tumor removed in 2005 and, years later, a heart valve was implanted and he also underwent surgery for a knee ligament.
