Modesto Villaverde, who turns 100 this Tuesday, August 18, is one of those people who, despite his age, has a young spirit. Spanish and Argentine, this retired gendarme and certified diver previously dived, the last time at 96 years old in the Red Sea.
According to his grandson, the Guinness Book of Records has already accepted his application to attempt to achieve the record for the oldest diver in the world, with the conditions that it be in open sea, at a minimum depth of 12 meters, for a duration of 30 minutes, and with an instructor as a witness.
For weeks, Villaverde and his family have been immersed in the search for a diving center that will allow him to fulfill his dream. His goal is to achieve this milestone in Lanzarote, and they point out that a diving center in Playa Blanca has already given them the go-ahead for this dive planned for September or October.
However, they have also held conversations with Egypt and the Middle East, where the Red Sea diving authorities are already looking for an operator for them. "We want it to be in Spain: a Spaniard making history at home, at 100 years old. Whether it can be in Lanzarote depends on whether we find the support here that other destinations are already offering," they point out.
