The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert situation in Lanzarote, La Graciosa, and Fuerteventura due to rain ahead of the passage of the high-impact storm Bruna. Thus, the Canary Executive has activated the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
The measure comes into effect this Saturday, from 9:00 PM, due to the possible risk of pluvial flooding.
According to the forecast, this meteorological episode will begin during Saturday night, first affecting the western province and extending throughout Sunday towards the east of the archipelago. In the specific case of Lanzarote, intense rainfall is expected that could reach or exceed 20 millimeters in just one hour.
Although the rain is not expected to reach the persistence that the western islands and Gran Canaria, which are on alert, will register, the localized intensity of the downpours advises extreme caution.
Recommendations to the population of Lanzarote
Given this meteorological scenario, emergency authorities have issued a series of recommendations to minimize possible risks and floods:
-
Review of domestic infrastructure: Check the condition of downspouts, drains, roofs, and water tanks.
-
Vehicles and watercourses: Completely avoid parking vehicles in ravine beds or areas that are usually flooded, even if the sky remains clear.
-
Road circulation: Avoid unnecessary travel. If driving is essential, reduce speed, pay attention to possible landslides or puddles on the road, and never cross flooded sections.
-
Home: Secure doors and windows, disconnect electrical appliances to protect them from power surges, and have basic items such as flashlights, drinking water, and medication readily available.
-
Outdoor activities: Suspend excursions, camping areas, or activities in rural and coastal areas until normality returns.
