Controversies regarding damage to Lanzarote's heritage are back. A tourist has been the protagonist of harsh criticism for having made graffiti in some old and ruined houses on the island, something that has outraged many Lanzarote residents who have shown their opinion through social networks.
The artist Vanessa Alice, who has boasted on her Instagram account of the drawing made, has been "very happy" with the result achieved. "I found a spectacular abandoned house and painted on it. It's been years since I painted spontaneously, but the island is inspiring," she accompanied in a text next to the photo. In addition, she has highlighted the feelings she harbors during her stay on the island. "Lanzarote, I'm in love with you and I'm happy to leave a little bit of me here."
The criticisms have been immediate. Since the graffiti was made this Saturday, several users have expressed their discontent and have sent it to La Voz. "It is a pity that tourism is arriving without respecting the authenticity of the island", some of the readers have revealed. An event that means for the people of Lanzarote the loss of the island's heritage. "Whether they are in ruins or not, it is our culture and what our grandparents left us", they added.
Some images that have reached the Cabildo of Lanzarote during these days. Its president, Oswaldo Betancort, also wanted to express himself: "I oppose this type of artistic interventions in our land", he has published on social networks. He makes it clear that "art does have a place in our islands but integrating and respecting heritage and culture".
In addition, Betancort has proposed a meeting with the artist to discuss what happened and its consequences. "I invite the artist Vanessa Alice to a meeting at the Cabildo to talk and explain our point of view and the consequences of this type of action", he declared on Instagram.
