Canary Islands declare maximum heat alert in Lanzarote and La Graciosa

Locally, temperatures equal to or higher than 41 - 44 degrees are not ruled out in inland areas of the island.

The General Directorate of Emergencies, based on the Aemet forecast and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), has declared the maximum heat alert in Lanzarote and La Graciosa from 2:00 p.m. this Friday. This alert also extends to the rest of the islands.

In addition, the State Meteorological Agency has also activated the red warning for this situation starting this Sunday.

The Government of the Canary Islands reports that this long-lasting heat episode "with a high probability of meeting the Aemet criteria to become a heat wave, will leave maximum temperatures that will reach or exceed 40 degrees in most of the archipelago. In addition, there will also be haze.

Locally, temperatures equal to or higher than 41 - 44 degrees are not ruled out in inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and in the midlands of the south and west of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

It will also be hot at night and during the early morning hours inland, in the midlands and high areas, the minimum temperatures will exceed 25 - 30, something that is known as "hellish nights" in which it will be difficult to fall asleep.
