Canary Islands continued to be the leader in the country in marital breakdowns during the past summer. This is reported by the General Council of the Judiciary in a press release.
The judicial bodies of the Canary Islands have registered a rate of 51.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the third quarter of 2023, as has been the case since December 2019.
According to the report released this Monday, between July and September 2023 the civil courts of the Archipelago recorded a total of 1,147 lawsuits for separations, divorces or marriage annulments, 0.9% less than in the same period of 2022 (1,157).
The second was that of the Valencian community (49.2), and the third, that of La Rioja (47.5). The national average was 40.8 marital breakdowns per 100,000 inhabitants, that is, 14 points below the Canarian average. The community with the lowest rate was the Basque Country (33.2).
Data at the Spain level
Nationally, lawsuits for marital dissolution, annulments, separations and divorces remained during the third quarter of the year at very similar figures to those recorded between July and September 2022.
The 19,608 lawsuits registered in total in the judicial bodies have meant an interannual increase of 0.5%, according to data collected by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary.
In the analyzed period, divorce lawsuits by mutual agreement (11,303) decreased by 0.2%, while non-consensual divorces (7,522) increased by 1.5% compared to last year.
Regarding separation lawsuits, non-consensual ones (224) decreased by 6.3% and consensual ones (545) increased by 6.7%. The number of annulment lawsuits, 14, was 17.6% lower than those filed during the third quarter of 2022.
If the total number of marital dissolution lawsuits of the quarter is related to the population as of January 1, 2023, it is observed that the highest number of dissolution lawsuits per 100,000 inhabitants occurred in the Canary Islands, with 51.8; Valencian Community, with 49.2; La Rioja, with 47.5; Murcia, with 44.8; Castilla-La Mancha, with 43.6; Andalusia, with 43.5; and Balearic Islands, with 42.8. In all these territories, the rate exceeds the national average, which stood at 40.9 lawsuits per 100,000 inhabitants.
On the contrary, the lowest rates occurred in the Basque Country, with 33.2; Castilla y León, with 33.9; Madrid, with 34.5; and Navarra, with 35.3.
Custody of minors
The judicial bodies received a total of 4,664 lawsuits for guardianship, custody and alimony of non-marital children by mutual agreement, which increased by 5% compared to those filed a year ago. The non-consensual ones, 5,724, increased by 4.3%.
For their part, the modifications of agreed measures, 2,699, experienced an interannual increase of 7.4% and the non-consensual ones, 6,542, of 2.5%.
