Calls to the telephone service for Attention to Women Victims of Gender Violence 112 grew by 13% in the first six months of 2026. Between January and June, a total of 9,693 calls related to sexist violence were registered with this service, which is dependent on the Canarian Institute for Equality (ICI). Of these, a total of 795 were issued from Lanzarote.
In June alone, 1,711 calls were recorded, of which 60 corresponded to women who reported having some disability, as reported this Tuesday in a statement by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands. Furthermore, in Lanzarote, a total of 169 calls for sexist violence were registered last June.
Emergency devices for assaulted women
Of the total calls received between January and June, 59% (5,717) were considered emergencies, as they involved imminent danger to the victim and required the activation of police, health, or Emergency Devices for Assaulted Women (DEMA) resources.
DEMAs were activated on 1,117 occasions and allowed for the emergency accommodation of 219 women and their 92 children to protect them from their aggressors. Additionally, 5,516 police resources and 477 health resources were mobilized.
The director of the ICI, Ana Padrón, stated that "gender violence is a structural problem that does not cease" and defended the need to reinforce involvement "from all areas to corner abusers and ensure women feel protected."
Padrón added that the Government of the Canary Islands has reinforced "all protection mechanisms" in recent years, although she considered it necessary to increase early detection in health, educational, and labor settings, as well as to create greater citizen awareness "to combat growing denialism."
Calls from minors and the elderly increase
By age groups, calls related to minors under 18 years of age increased particularly, rising from 123 in the first half of 2025 to 165 this year, a 34% increase.
Alerts from women over 76 years of age also grew, with 105 cases compared to the 79 registered in the same period of the previous year, representing an increase of 32%.
In the remaining age groups, 1,738 alerts were received from women between 18 and 35 years old; 2,166 from women aged 36 to 55; and 599 from women between 56 and 75 years old.
65% of aggressors are partners or ex-partners
The majority of identified aggressors were the victim's partner, with 4,054 cases, or ex-partner, with 2,471.
Aggressions committed by children (458), strangers (212), siblings (169), fathers (134), and friends (113) were also recorded.
Regarding the typology of aggressions, nearly 5% corresponded to sexual aggressions, which required activating the 24-hour crisis centers on 200 occasions.
41% of the cases were physical violence without sexual aggression and another 41% corresponded to non-physical violence.
42% of the calls were made by the victim themselves, while 22% came from accidental alert persons, 18% from institutions, and 5% from relatives.
