Arrecife will become the first city in the Canary Islands to declare itself 'Veg Friendly'. This will be thanks to the collaboration agreement that, according to the City Council itself, through the Department of Tourism, and the Lanzarote Vegano Association will sign in the coming days.
"With this measure, Arrecife is positioned alongside cities such as Barcelona, Berlin or Vitoria, adopting an innovative, ecological, sustainable and ethical measure with people and animals, in addition to helping the local economy and promoting tourism," they explain.
As explained by Rafael Juan González, current acting mayor and also councilor for Tourism, the objective is to "support and promote the inclusion of healthy habits through the adoption of measures that help citizens and their visitors to enjoy a vegetarian diet and lifestyle option." The councilor emphasizes that "vegetarianism is growing exponentially throughout Europe and Arrecife is ahead, adapting to a greener, healthier and more respectful future."
A guide and an application of establishments with vegetarian alternatives
In this way, the capital's Department of Tourism is committed to developing a guide and an application where you can consult the bars and restaurants that have a vegetarian alternative on their menus. Likewise, a certification seal will be created, which will identify the establishments that have these vegetable alternatives, and establishments that consider it appropriate may join.
On the other hand, all events in which the City Council collaborates will have an alternative free of products of animal origin, "as has already been done in the last tapas fairs that we have organized," said Rafael Juan González.
"The fact that the City Council is directly involved in the promotion of 'Veg' food will generate significant results: it will be much easier to find 100% vegetarian alternatives in bars and restaurants; initiatives to support vegan culture will flourish and the seed of respect for animals will find a much more fertile ground," highlights the Consistory.
A diet "more beneficial for health, more ethical and sustainable"
The Lanzarote Vegano Association has committed to collaborate with the Consistory to achieve, among other things, a city in which the numerous national and foreign tourists who visit it every year find "easier to find an offer appropriate to their preferences".
"This measure is not exclusive only for vegetarians and vegans, but all citizens will benefit from a more beneficial food option for their health, as well as more ethical and sustainable," explained the head of Tourism.
According to data provided by the City Council in its press release, the clientele of vegetarian restaurants in the city is usually 80% of people who are not vegan or vegetarian, and "instead seek a healthier diet and / or a transition to vegetarianism or veganism." They add that in a few days the distinctive plates will begin to be seen in establishments that offer vegetarian alternatives to their customers.
