The city of Arrecife experienced, for another year, one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular celebrations in its calendar with the solemnity of the Corpus Christi festival, a day that once again brought together hundreds of faithful and neighbors around a tradition that is part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the capital of Lanzarote.
The eve of Corpus Christi was marked by one of the most emblematic popular manifestations of the municipality: the creation of the traditional marine salt carpets. During a night filled with excitement, work, and community spirit, hundreds of neighbors, integrated into associations, cultural groups, parish groups, and entities of various kinds, took to the city streets to craft the colorful carpets that would serve as a path for the procession of the Blessed Sacrament.
These authentic ephemeral works of art, made with marine salts dyed entirely by hand, transformed the main streets of the processional route into a spectacle of color, creativity, and devotion. A tradition that, far from losing its relevance, continues to strengthen year after year thanks to the effort and commitment of those who participate in its creation.
The Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Culture headed by councilor Abigail González, actively collaborated in the development of this initiative, coordinating the work and supplying a large part of the necessary material for the creation of the carpets.
Despite their popular nature, the salt carpets achieve extraordinary artistic quality each edition, becoming an attraction that awakens the admiration of both the people of Lanzarote and the numerous visitors who come to contemplate them.
On Sunday morning, the main day of the festival, the main church of San Ginés Obispo was completely full. From the early hours, numerous faithful arrived with the intention of attending the celebration of the Eucharist, to the point that all three naves of the temple were completely occupied. Many people even had to follow the ceremony from Plaza de Las Palmas due to the impossibility of accessing the interior of the church.
The solemn Eucharist, celebrated at noon, was presided over by priest Samuel Alirio Aguilar Mazzey, assisted by the titular parish priest of San Ginés Obispo, Juan Carlos Medina. The parish choir contributed to enhancing the celebration with their songs, to which the voices of numerous parishioners joined, creating an atmosphere of deep participation and recollection.
Once the Holy Mass concluded, the traditional Corpus Christi procession began through the streets of Arrecife. The Blessed Sacrament, carried in the Monstrance by the celebrating priests and sheltered under the Canopy, a symbol of the utmost honor, respect, and adoration for the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, traveled the processional route over the salt carpets prepared the previous night.
The Music Band La Unión Musical de Lanzarote, directed by professor Pepe Artiles, musically accompanied the entire route, adding solemnity and brilliance to a procession followed by numerous faithful who wished to accompany the Blessed Sacrament on one of the most significant dates for the Catholic community.
One of the most emotional moments of the day was experienced when the Blessed Sacrament, under the Canopy, crossed the threshold of the main door of the church of San Ginés Obispo. At that moment, it was received with the chords of the National Anthem performed by the music band, while the ringing of the bells solemnly announced the start of the procession. The emotion of the moment was reflected in the prolonged applause of the faithful who crowded the surroundings of the temple to witness the processional parade.
Arrecife thus demonstrated once again its deep devotion to Corpus Christi and its firm commitment to the preservation of traditions that unite faith, culture, and citizen participation, consolidating this celebration as one of the most outstanding events in the religious and social calendar of the Lanzarote capital.
