This Sunday, September 21, Dr. Antonio Becerra, a 67-year-old surgeon, has died in Gran Canaria after a long illness. His loss is a severe blow to the health sector of the Canary Islands, especially for Lanzarote, where he developed a large part of his professional career.
Becerra retired this year, after more than four decades dedicated to medicine. Of his 42 years of practice, he devoted 30 to surgery, and for 24 of them he worked in the Surgery Service of Lanzarote, where he was a recognized figure by both his colleagues and his patients.
In addition to his work in the healthcare field, Antonio Becerra had a prominent role as a representative of the medical union in Lanzarote, defending the interests of his colleagues and fighting for the improvement of public health.
His commitment to society also led him to get involved in political life. In October 2017, he assumed the coordination of the Ciudadanos committee in Teguise, thus beginning a brief but significant foray into island politics.
Colleagues, patients and neighbors remember Antonio Becerra not only for his professionalism, but also for his closeness and dedication. His legacy will remain in the memory of those who knew him and worked by his side.
