The Lanzarote football referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández has been designated as VAR referee for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which will be held from November 21 to December 18 this year.

The International Federation of Football (FIFA) has designated a total of 24 video assistant referees (VAR), who will be responsible for evaluating and deciding through video arbitration. Among that select group of referees from around the world will be Alejandro Hernández Hernández from Lanzarote, born and trained as a referee in Lanzarote, who will attend the World Cup event at the age of 40.

"It is a pride for the city and an example for all the young people of the municipality that a resident of Arrecife is among those chosen from the refereeing group to participate decisively in what, without a doubt, is one of the most important sporting events worldwide," says the mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, who conveys her congratulations to the referee.

For his part, the Councilor for Sports, Rosmen Quevedo, expressed his satisfaction that the Lanzarote referee "is reaching the highest levels of refereeing." "A discipline for which he has been ascending since he was practically a child, and that in this case will lead him to participate in one of the most important sporting events in the world of football, enhancing the name of Arrecife and Lanzarote. I wish him good luck in this new challenge," said the Councilor for Sports, Rosmen Quevedo.
