A Reef Cleaning Service worker rescues a baby Cory's shearwater

A worker from the Municipal Cleaning Service of the Arrecife City Council rescued this Tuesday a shearwater chick, which was "underneath a car" on Barcelona street in Valterra.

According to the City Council, Alexis was carrying out his workday when he spotted the shearwater chick, which "probably disoriented by the lighting on the roads of the capital of Lanzarote, ended up tripping and falling to the ground." This worker helped her "with his hands" and rescued her from under the vehicle.

The City Council points out that, although this species nests in the Chinijo Archipelago, north of Lanzarote, "in their first flights the chicks become disoriented with the lights of street lighting, and appear in different places in the interior of the island, especially at this time of year."

This species, one of the largest seabirds in the Canary Islands, is included in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection and in the Red Book as Vulnerable, in addition to being included in Annex I of the Birds Directive.
