The new multipurpose oceanic vessel of the Civil Guard Duque de Ahumada, made this weekend one of its several technical stops in the Canary Islands in the Port of Arrecife, Muelle de los Mármoles.

Citizens were able to enjoy a visit to the ship, who were guided by the civil guards of the Maritime Service who serve on the vessel itself Duque de Ahumada. These explained the work they carry out from said vessel.

In September of last year, this new multipurpose oceanic vessel was delivered to the Civil Guard. It was built in the Armón shipyards in Vigo, becoming part of the fleet of vessels of the Maritime Service of this Corps, this being the largest.

The vessel has dimensions of 82.15 meters in length, 14 in beam and 4.7 in draft, featuring a helipad, five decks, an ROV (remotely operated submersible vehicle) for inspection and underwater search tasks, aerial surveillance drones, and two rigid boats for interception and rescue.

It has capacity for 56 crew members who would be distributed in 35 cabins, and a shipwrecked persons' room enabled for more than 100 people, equipped with separate space for women and children.

Furthermore, it is equipped with an infirmary and hospital space with the possibility of direct telemedicine transmission with Madrid. Its operational capacity without touching port can be extended up to 30 days, with an autonomy of 11,000 miles (20,400 km.), which expands the radius and duration of missions.

The equipment includes latest generation navigation and communication systems. The main missions assigned to this vessel, within the Strait Maritime Group Unit (Cádiz), are the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, irregular immigration, Judicial and Governmental Police functions, inspection of fishing and recreational vessels and boats, fight against marine pollution and against marine archaeological looting, as well as control and rescue operations on the high seas.

This vessel has recently participated in two major cocaine intervention operations in the Atlantic: operation Abisal with the largest cocaine seizure in history, 30 tons, and operation Alfa-Lima with 11 tons seized and 8.5 of hashish in a 14-consecutive-day deployment.
