Islas de Resistencia and Colectivo Tabaiba have placed several handwritten notes on different rental cars in Lanzarote to warn tourists about the tourist pressure and what overcrowding causes in the archipelago.
Both groups have warned in these notes about the consequences of mass tourism on the local population, which causes the exile of residents from their neighborhoods, an increase in housing prices, and a lack of housing due to the boom in vacation rentals.
On the notes, placed on the windshields of the cars, one can read "by choosing this VV (vacation rental) in our town, you are contributing to our expulsion". "We have nowhere to live, they are kicking us off the island. Travel responsibly, don't be part of this business," continues the message, which has also been translated into English.
The video, published this Wednesday on their social media, already has over 22,500 views.
Thus, currently, Lanzarote registers 11,005 vacation rentals, according to the disaggregated data in the General Tourist Registry of the Canary Islands, which is updated daily. In contrast, in June 2023, Lanzarote had less than half the vacation rentals it has today, a total of 5,198.
Regarding the price of housing, the square meter to buy a home in Lanzarote stood at 3,122 euros in May of this year, 10.6% more expensive than a year ago when it cost 2,822 euros, according to figures provided by the Lanzarote Data Center.
