A campaign launched on the platform Change.org seeks to stop the demolition of the Choza de los Barcos, on Seifío beach, between Charco del Palo and Mala. The initiative, which so far has accumulated less than a hundred signatures, asks that the more than "one hundred years of history" of this little house facing the sea, owned by Emiliano Ventura, not be erased.
On the aforementioned platform, the initiative states that last week structures that had been part of the landscape of Lanzarote for decades disappeared. Specifically, the Directorate General of the Coast and the Sea demolished two coastal huts in Haría, one between Punta Mujeres and Órzola and the second next to Emiliano Ventura's hut.
"We are not talking about a modern construction. We are not talking about a building erected yesterday. We are talking about our history," reads this initiative. In this regard, it points out that this construction exposes the history of humble families who found their way of life in the sea and who left "a part of their effort, their sacrifices, and their memories" in these constructions.
This petition also argues that demolishing this small hut is also "erasing part of the memory of a family" and of "a town." "It is losing forever a testimony of how our ancestors lived, of what our coastline was like, and of how, with effort and humility, the identity of Lanzarote was built," it adds.
During a conversation with La Voz, Ventura indicated that he filed an appeal against the resolution from Costas that ordered the demolition of the property. This legal tool has allowed him to gain one to two more years with the hut, but he is aware that sooner or later he will have to say goodbye. "For me, it is a refuge," revealed the Lanzarote resident during the interview.
The insular director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera, explained then to La Voz that there are three huts in this space, one of them, the one that was demolished on Wednesday, did not have an enabling title, while the owners of the other two filed an appeal to prevent the demolition.
