The programming of the new 2026-2027 academic year of the "Hablemos de la Biosfera" (Let's Talk About the Biosphere) lecture series will kick off with the participation of zoologist Claudia Schuster, who will give the lecture titled "On the Trail of the Canary Shrew: Two Years of Research in the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote". The event will take place in the Auditorium of the UNED, a collaborating center of the Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, on September 22nd at 7:30 PM, with free admission until full capacity. During the meeting, Schuster will share the experiences, observations, and main results of a research project developed over the last two years in Lanzarote and the islet of Montaña Clara thanks to a grant from the Department of Environment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, awarded to the Group for the Rehabilitation of Native Fauna and its Habitat (GREFA-Canarias). The presentation will provide firsthand knowledge of how the study was designed and executed, what questions guided the scientific work, and what answers have been obtained about one of the most unique and least known species of the archipelago.
According to counselor Samuel Martín, the "Hablemos de la Biosfera" series "continues to bet on scientific dissemination and the enhancement of knowledge generated in our territory, bringing citizens closer to advances in research and conservation of the island's natural heritage."
The lecture is aimed at both people interested in biodiversity conservation and the general public who wish to approach the fascinating world of native Canarian fauna. Claudia Schuster is the coordinator of the Group for the Rehabilitation of Native Fauna and its Habitat (GREFA-Canarias). Born in Germany in 1966, she holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of La Laguna, with a specialization in Zoology.
His connection with the Canary shrew dates back to 2001, when he moved to Lanzarote to work at Timanfaya National Park on fauna monitoring tasks. Between 2020 and 2021, he participated in the drafting of the Canary Shrew Conservation Plan for the Government of the Canary Islands. Throughout his professional career, he has also worked intensively on the conservation of steppe birds, especially the Canary bustard, participating in population monitoring campaigns and in the drafting of its Recovery Plan.
