The General Directorate of the Patient and Chronicity of the Canary Islands Health Service, in coordination with the Primary Care Managements of all the islands, has reinforced the communication of people with hearing disabilities during their assistance in health centers with the installation of magnetic induction loops at patient service counters in two health centers in Lanzarote. Thus, the communication and accessibility of this group of people with hearing disabilities continue to be reinforced.
These devices allow users of hearing aids and cochlear implants to receive sound more clearly and without interference during their attention at information and admission points, thus promoting more effective, safe, and needs-adapted communication.
With the implementation of this tool, the SCS continues to advance in the elimination of barriers in access to public health services and reinforces its commitment to the humanization of care, promoting a more accessible health system for all citizens.
These devices have been distributed on the different islands according to accessibility and territorial balance criteria. In this way, five have been installed in health centers in Tenerife and five in Gran Canaria, two in Lanzarote, two in Fuerteventura and two in La Palma, and one in La Gomera and another in El Hierro.
The implementation of this technology improves communicative exchange and allows for private conversations while maintaining moderate voice levels in public service environments such as counters, reception areas, or bank offices. This facilitates an adaptation tool for spaces and situations contaminated by ambient noise, sound reverberation, or where distance hinders communication.
Operation of the mechanism
The loop is a system that emits wireless magnetic signals that are picked up by hearing aids and cochlear implants, allowing the sound to reach the user's ear clearly and without interference, avoiding reverberations, ambient noise, and listening difficulties caused by the distance from the sound emission source.
The design of this tool, which has a microphone that picks up the sound signal and a converter amplifier, significantly improves the quality of listening and communication, facilitating clean, intelligible sound with adequate volume in complex environments with background noise or echo. The space equipped with this technology is signposted with the icon of an ear with a "T", to indicate that the place has a magnetic induction system available.
Person-Centered Care Strategy
This measure is part of the actions contemplated within the Person-Centered Healthcare Strategy 2025-2029 that the Directorate General for Patients and Chronicity of the SCS is developing.
Among the specific measures, various lines of action are included for the reduction of barriers with the aim of facilitating accessible and empathetic care, as well as improving the accessibility of spaces, communication, and the transmission of information.
