The 'Planting the Future' project brings together 500 people to naturalize a plot in Argana Alta

Last Saturday saw the conclusion of the first phase of the Planting the Future activity, organized by the Biosphere Reserve area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, chaired by Oswaldo Betancort, whose purpose is to contribute to the naturalization of public spaces in Arrecife. The initiative, which has involved 500 people, has allowed the planting of 200 specimens of native flora of five different species over the last two months.

The project, marked by a substantial pedagogical and informative component, has been aimed at raising awareness among educational communities, social groups and citizens. During the workshops, the monitors of Arrecife Natura have emphasized the benefits derived from the conservation of biodiversity, the production of oxygen, the role of vegetation in counteracting the effects of global warming, and the aesthetic and heritage values of island endemisms.

The Tojia (Asteriscus intermedius), Yerba Risco (Lavandula pinnata), Verol (Kleinia neriifolia), Sweet Tabaiba (Euphorbia balsamifera), Verol (Aeonium lancerottense) and Cornical (Periploca laevigata) seedlings already shine in the new capital garden, showing its ornamental virtues in gardening, its capacity to adapt to the island climate and the enormous impact of a small collective action on an un-intervened public space.

According to the Councilor of the Biosphere Reserve, Samuel Martín, Planting the Future will continue in the coming months with watering and cleaning activities and will resume from October with new plantations.
