The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has increased its staff of Oncology specialists by 60% since 2022 and has reinforced the Nursing team to respond to the growth in healthcare activity, which registers 36% more hospitalized patients and a continued increase in oncological consultations and treatments.
With the aim of offering specialized and comprehensive care to people with cancer in Lanzarote, the hospital center consolidates the growth of the Oncology section and goes from five to eight Oncology specialists. The Nursing team has also been reinforced with the incorporation of three nurses and a nursing auxiliary technician (TCAE), resulting in a multidisciplinary team, made up of eight oncologists, nineteen nurses, and nine TCAEs, which allows for continued improvement in the care and monitoring of oncological patients.
During 2025, the section attended a total of 12,143 Oncology consultations, while the professionals at the Oncological Day Hospital, an essential resource for the administration of outpatient treatments, carried out 6,470 procedures in 2025, which represents an increase of 15% compared to 2022 when 5,661 were performed.
Nursing and Day Hospital
Nursing consultations have experienced significant growth, going from 546 attended in 2022 to 1,119 in 2025, which represents an increase of over 100%. This data highlights the relevant role of professionals in treatment monitoring, health education, nutritional advice, side effect control, and patient support.
More Patients and Greater Hospital Activity
The evolution of the service section is also reflected in the increase in the number of patients attended and hospitalization activity. Since 2022, the number of people attended has increased by 36%, going from 220 to 299 patients. Hospital stays related to oncology also registered an increase of 38%.
These indicators demonstrate both the sustained increase in healthcare demand and the team's capacity to respond to increasingly complex care, maintaining a model focused on quality and continuity of care.
Consolidation of Radiotherapy Oncology
The comprehensive care for cancer patients is completed with the activity of the Radiotherapy Oncology unit of Molina Orosa. In 2025, the unit evaluated 151 patients in their first consultation, performed 2,549 medical follow-up reviews, and carried out 1,094 Nursing consultations and procedures. Furthermore, it treated 315 patients through external radiotherapy, administering a total of 3,828 sessions.
These figures demonstrate the growth and consolidation of the unit since its launch in 2023, making it possible for an increasing number of patients to complete their oncological treatment in Lanzarote, avoiding travel to the reference hospital in Gran Canaria.
Growing to improve
The head of the Oncology section, Cynthia González, emphasizes that "the growth of the team has allowed us to improve response capacity and reinforce patient follow-up, in addition to offering more personalized care, thanks to the coordinated work of the professionals."
For his part, the manager of the Lanzarote Health Services, Pablo Eguia, highlights that "the strengthening of the Oncology service responds to the commitment to continue improving care for cancer patients, incorporating new professionals and reinforcing healthcare resources so that citizens can access increasingly comprehensive and higher quality specialized care, avoiding travel to other islands."
