The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa informs that the solemn mass for the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, initially scheduled for this Tuesday, September 15, at 11:00 AM in Mancha Blanca, has been postponed until 6:00 PM due to the maximum alert for high temperatures declared by the Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The change in schedule has been agreed upon jointly with the Diocese of the Canary Islands, in accordance with the recommendations established to reduce the population's exposure during the hottest hours.
Suspension of outdoor activities between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM
The schedule change comes after the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium, in view of the maximum alert for high temperatures declared by the Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, recommended that the town councils not permit outdoor sports, recreational, cultural, and leisure activities between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM starting this Tuesday.
According to the forecasts provided by the Directorate General of Emergencies, very high temperatures are expected in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which could reach 37 degrees Celsius in inland areas and on the south-facing slopes. A progressive decrease is forecast for Wednesday, the 16th, although high values will be maintained in different parts of the island.
The Consortium will maintain this recommendation until the Directorate General of Emergencies lowers the current high-temperature alert and requests the public to exercise extreme caution, especially for the elderly, children, and other at-risk groups.
Among the main measures, it is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure, stay in cool places as much as possible, reduce physical activity during the central hours of the day, wear light clothing, and drink water frequently. It is also reminded that children, the elderly, or pets should never be left inside a closed vehicle.
If symptoms such as malaise, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, cramps, excessive sweating, or skin redness appear, it is recommended to suspend activity, cool down, rest in a cool place, and hydrate. If symptoms persist or signs compatible with heatstroke appear, medical assistance should be sought and 112 should be contacted.
The Craft Fair will be open from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
The alert situation also forces the adaptation of the last day of the 37th Craft Fair of Lanzarote, which this Tuesday will open its doors from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Mancha Blanca fairgrounds.
The program will begin at 6:00 PM with the Parranda Janubio, which will tour the grounds; the demonstrations of Juego del Palo, by the Cristín Feo de León de Haría Palo School, and Salto del Pastor, by Jurria Temeje and commented on by Ignacio Romero Perera.
Also starting at 6:00 PM, the family workshops "Create your ball with the rosette technique" and "The Lanzarote hat", as well as the craft workshops "Looking for the footprints of Lanzarote: introduction to botanical printing on wool", by the Uruguayan artisan Fabiana Gómez, and "Painted pottery from El Mojón: tohio", taught by Aquilino Rodríguez and Hirahi Rodríguez, will take place.
The Fair's program will continue at 7:30 PM with the musical performance "Ecos de mujer", by Acatife, on the fairgrounds stage.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa requests that the population take into account the schedule changes planned for this Tuesday in Mancha Blanca and follow the instructions of the security and emergency services at all times.
