Various spokespeople for the housing encampment in Arrecife, which began on Tuesday night in Ramírez Cerdá park, have told EFE that the Local Police of Arrecife have approached the location on three occasions, identified the people who were there, and have warned them with fines of up to 4,500 euros per person.
These same sources have highlighted that the officers stated that they could not hang banners from the park's pergolas because it is a Site of Cultural Interest and that they have given them until this Thursday to dismantle the camp, formed by half a dozen tents.
They also point out that on one of the occasions, the mayor of the Lanzarote capital, Yonathan de León (PP), approached the bandstand next to the park.
"The encampment is being organized, we are in assemblies, we have different groups and we are in assemblies all the time informing people who are coming and we are also informing ourselves with people from other encampments," said one of the spokespeople.
The organization has emphasized that their intention is to raise awareness of the housing problem and that it is a peaceful gathering.
"We are outraged by housing, Lanzarote is a small island and in a few years it has become Ibiza, we no longer even have rooms for rent, salaries are very low and prices are through the roof," they assured.
