The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) is organizing the workshop titled From Traditional Image to Artificial Intelligence. Creation, Editing, and Visual Culture in the Era of Generative Models, which will be taught by United Unknown —a collective specializing in audiovisual creation, visual activism, and political satire—, next Thursday, October 8, between 18:00 and 21:00, in the José Saramago hall of La Plazuela (Arrecife).
The workshop proposes a journey through the profound transformations that audiovisual creation is undergoing with the irruption of generative artificial intelligence. Through examples, practical demonstrations, and participatory activities, attendees will learn how these technologies are modifying the way images and videos are created, edited, and interpreted.
During the session, issues such as the authenticity of images will be addressed in a context where it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between the real, the artificial, and the manipulated. Likewise, a selection of creations made with artificial intelligence that stand out for their artistic, technical, or narrative quality will be presented. Through these examples, it will be analyzed how AI can become a tool at the service of a gaze, an intention, and a creative direction, beyond the purely technological impact.
The workshop will also include an introduction to multimodal models, capable of understanding instructions formulated through text and images, and will show how interaction through natural language is transforming audiovisual creation and editing processes. Practical demonstrations will be carried out with specialized tools for generating and editing images and video using artificial intelligence. However, rather than offering a catalog of applications, the proposal aims to provide criteria for understanding this new way of working with images: learning to dialogue with models, direct them, critically evaluate their results, and consciously incorporate them into creative processes.
In the last part of the workshop a fragment of the documentary Todo es un Remix will be screened, which will serve as a starting point for reflecting on contemporary audiovisual culture. Specifically, on issues such as the relationships between creation, appropriation, reference, and influence, as well as the differences between copying, being inspired by, transforming, and paying homage. Matters that have always been part of the history of art and images, but which acquire a new dimension with generative models.
The workshop is aimed at all those interested in images, video, audiovisual culture, and new creative technologies, with no prior knowledge of artificial intelligence required. Participation is free, as are all activities organized by the FCM, and there is a limited number of places. Registered participants must enroll by calling 928 843 138, between 9:00 and 14:00. The registration period opens on Monday, October 5, and closes on Wednesday, October 7, or when full capacity is reached. Places will be allocated on a strict first-come, first-served basis.
United Unknown is a collective founded in 2010, which uses visual activism and political satire as a weapon of mass subversion. In the field of audiovisual creation, they work with classic image and video editing programs, and since 2019 they have been incorporating artificial intelligence tools into their workflow: from deepfake software to re-trained generative image models with AI.
They have collaborated on graphic and audiovisual projects for Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Fundació Arrels, Barcelona Centre of Contemporary Culture (CCCB), El Terrat, Mediapro, Movistar+, TV3, Atresmedia, Relevo Deportes, Premios Ondas, La2, Mongolia Magazine, Espacio Tangente, and on television programs such as Late Motiv, Showriano, Locomundo, APM?, El día después, and Expediente Pérez
