Event for International Women's Day at the Cabildo of Lanzarote

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, joined this Friday, on the occasion of March 8, the commemoration of International Women's Day, congratulating all the people and groups that promote the fight for equality and the imperative need to continue betting on equality policies every day of the year.

“It is absolutely necessary to make this desire a priority and transversal issue that permeates every government action, every decision and every measure we take, even when there are no spotlights or the news opens with purple flags or ribbons, or a day is not marked on the calendar,” he added.

In the act of recognition of leading women from each of the municipalities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa that took place in the Cabildo, the president of the Corporation, Oswaldo Betancort, has stated that “the struggle of women is an ambition of justice that challenges and involves society as a whole and that we must share, and that is why we have gathered here to open this March 8 with a documentary work that focuses on eight women, who have not always or all of them, have occupied headlines or have extended their popularity beyond their communities, but whom we consider role models and an example to follow for future generations.”

Carmen Nieves Pérez and Marielena Fernández have been the authors of the documentary, which premiered this Friday in an emotional event in which the work and legacy of Rosa Torres, Juana Delgado, María de los Ángeles Cabrera, Dalia Reyes, Pura Alayón, Cira García, Sebastiana Perera and Margarita Páez have been recognized. All of them have received a commemorative plaque from Betancort, the Minister of Equality, Marci Acuña, as well as other municipal representatives who have supported the honorees.

Exhibition 'Women in capital letters'

After the screening of this work, the Cabildo has inaugurated the photographic exhibition 'Women in capital letters', by the artist Mónica Rodríguez Medina, ICI (Canary Islands Institute of Equality) 2020 award from the Government of the Canary Islands, for the best initiative of social interest. The exhibition consists of 60 photographs of women and will remain open on the ground floor of the Cabildo until April 5.

The artist has thanked the institution and the entire team of the area for the opportunity to show the result of a work that arose from the search for images of the primary sector, finding hundreds of photographs of women. “Taking advantage of this positive discrimination, I wanted to show these anonymous women who are the true protagonists of this exhibition,” explained the photographer Mónica Rodríguez.

The 8M day continued with the meeting between young people from the island with the singer Sara Socas in the assembly hall of the Cabildo and that has allowed 650 students from ESO on the island to maintain an interesting debate on current musical and social issues with the young Canarian composer.

The program of events is completed this afternoon, at 4:00 p.m., with the concentration in the Plazuela de Arrecife, organized by the Feminist Platform 8M Lanzarote and the Forum Against Gender Violence with the collaboration of the Arrecife City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

At 7:00 p.m., the reading of several manifestos is scheduled and later there will be an 8M demonstration, in collaboration with the Arrecife City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote, whose route will run between the Plazuela and the Government Delegation.

The protest day will conclude with the free concert of the singer Sara Socas in the Family Park in the town of Tahíche.
