The Allergology section of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital attended a total of 11,647 consultations and performed 14,630 diagnostic and therapeutic tests during 2025, consolidating significant growth in its healthcare capacity and the care it provides to patients in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

Dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunological system diseases, this section has experienced a notable increase in activity over the last three years. The first consultations have grown by more than 60%, and subsequent ones by around 31% in that period. This trend is also observed in the tests and studies performed, whose growth is estimated at more than 50%, increasing from the 9,608 performed in 2022 to the 14,630 carried out throughout last year.

The increase in healthcare activity has been possible thanks to the progressive incorporation of professionals, the impetus of the Plan Activa Canarias, and various organizational and management improvements developed in recent years. During this time, a physician, two nurses, and two nursing care technicians have joined the team.

This set of measures has made it possible to increase the response capacity of this section and offer more agile and effective care to patients, in a context where the demand for allergological care continues to grow year after year.

Currently, the section is composed of five specialist physicians, five nurses, five nursing care technicians, and two administrative staff.

Same-day diagnosis and treatment

The healthcare activity of Allergology is carried out through high-resolution consultations that allow patients to receive their diagnosis and treatment on the same day as their appointment. After the specialist's evaluation in consultation, the patient is referred to the functional testing room, where nurses perform skin and respiratory function tests.

On the other hand, relevant studies for diagnosis are carried out, such as allergy tests for food, drugs, and other allergens, as well as epicutaneous tests.

Organizational improvements and coordination with Primary Care

The Allergology department maintains continuous coordination with Primary Care to resolve clinical doubts, guide referrals, and facilitate patient follow-up. The improvement of healthcare activity has also been supported by internal organizational changes and the continuous adaptation of schedules and care pathways.

Advanced treatments for patients with severe pathologies

The Allergology team administers immunotherapy or allergy vaccines and biological therapies daily for patients with severe pathologies such as severe asthma, nasal polyposis, severe atopic dermatitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

The section, led by Dr. Elena Martín, also develops desensitization programs for milk and eggs, the most common causes of food allergy among the pediatric population. These procedures, which until some time ago required the patient to be transferred to the reference hospital in Gran Canaria, aim to achieve tolerance to these foods, improve the quality of life of patients with severe allergies, and reduce reactions derived from their consumption.

This allows many families to complete the diagnosis and treatment of their children in Lanzarote, avoiding frequent trips off the island.

Likewise, these desensitization protocols are developed with oncological patients who have suffered allergic reactions to chemotherapeutic drugs. These are procedures that require close supervision by the specialist doctor and are carried out in the same hospital, in a safe and controlled environment, in order to allow patients to receive the most appropriate treatment.

More equipment and new spaces

The section has been incorporating the necessary equipment to meet the needs of the allergic population and satisfy the demand of these patients. In this regard, during the past year, a FeNO measurement device was acquired, specifically designed for the control of inflammatory respiratory diseases such as asthma.

In the same vein, the expansion of the functional testing area is planned with a new room that will be built soon and will be dedicated to carrying out skin and epicutaneous tests.

Work, organization, and commitment

The growth of activity has meant a significant effort of adaptation, organization, and commitment on the part of the professionals in this area, who have assumed the increase in demand while maintaining the quality and safety of care.

The head of the Allergy section, Elena Martín, values the work done by the team and highlights that "the most important thing is that today we can better serve patients. Behind every consultation, every test, and every treatment there are people who need a close, safe, and effective response, and that has been the driving force behind the work done in these years."

For his part, the manager of the Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguia del Río, highlights that the evolution of the service reflects the commitment and adaptability of its professionals. "The growth of activity, the incorporation of new services, and organizational improvements have been possible thanks to the sustained effort of the Allergy team. Without its professionals, these advances would not exist," he points out.

The Management continues to bet on improvement in terms of accessibility and spaces and emphasizes that the 2022-2025 period has meant a measurable advance in the care capacity of the service and in the response offered to patients in Lanzarote and La Graciosa with allergies.
