Records several smooth-hound shark pups in Órzola

A reader has recorded several pups of the smooth-hound shark swimming through Órzola. In a video sent to La Voz, this reader spots for the first time such a large group of newborn sharks.

This species is present in waters of the eastern Atlantic up to the Mediterranean. Thus, in some places its survival is vulnerable because it is used to make a typical Canarian dish called los tollos. It also lives near the coasts, in shallow waters, around 50 meters above sea level, which makes its sighting by humans more frequent.

The smooth-hound shark is a cartilaginous fish that can be dark brown or gray in color, with white spots and a whitish belly. Adult species can reach up to two meters in length, although on average they are around one meter or one and a half meters. It is a carnivorous animal and has blunt teeth with which it crushes its prey.
