Primary Care Nurses and instructors from the Lanzarote Health Area, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, have organized different activities and workshops on the occasion of World Drowning Prevention Day, in collaboration with the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium and the San Bartolomé City Council. The initiative, aimed at children and adults, aims to raise awareness about the importance of adopting preventive measures and promoting a culture of water safety.
Under the slogan ‘Drowning prevention is in our hands. Get informed and learn. Together we can save lives!’, the activities aim to provide citizens with knowledge and recommendations to reduce the risk of accidents in swimming pools, beaches, and aquatic environments, especially among children.
In this context, and as part of the ‘This summer, safe splash’ campaign, a workshop was held on July 27th for forty children from the summer schools of CEIP Playa Honda. The activity will be repeated on August 10th for the sports schools of the municipality of San Bartolomé.
Likewise, last Tuesday, July 28th, a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation workshop for families was held on Playa Honda avenue. The objective is for children to learn, in a practical and age-appropriate way, basic water safety guidelines, while also raising awareness among families and the adult population about the importance of vigilance and prevention.
Constant supervision of minors
In all activities, health professionals emphasize that prevention begins before entering the water and that the supervision of minors must be constant, especially in swimming pools and other areas where carelessness can have serious consequences.
The workshops highlight the need to respect signs and flags, avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol, and use life jackets in aquatic activities that require them. They also remind people of the importance of installing barriers to prevent uncontrolled access to water and providing children with safe areas away from risk zones, always with adequate supervision.
Furthermore, training the population in safe rescue techniques and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be decisive in an emergency situation. Professionals also highlight the importance of learning to swim correctly and acquiring basic water safety knowledge to prevent accidents and know how to act if they occur.
With this initiative, the professionals seek to bring prevention closer to the community and, especially, to children, using educational and participatory activities that allow them to identify risk situations and learn how to enjoy water safely.
Prevention and health education
The activity is part of the health education and prevention work carried out by Primary Care Nursing professionals, who play a fundamental role in promoting healthy habits and contribute to improving the safety and well-being of the population.
The campaign sends a clear message to the entire population: 'Preventing drowning is in everyone's hands'. Information, vigilance, training, and shared responsibility are essential tools to reduce risks and contribute to making summer and water activities safer.
In any emergency situation, the importance of calling 112 immediately is recalled.
