The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of pre-alert for maximum temperatures throughout the archipelago, a measure that will come into effect this Monday, June 29, at 11:00 AM due to the arrival of a heat episode predicted by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
According to the declaration issued this Saturday, the phenomenon will be characterized by a slight to moderate rise in temperatures, which will be especially pronounced in the western islands and Gran Canaria. In the case of Lanzarote, temperatures are expected to reach between 30 and 32 degrees in the interior and southern areas of the island.
The meteorological forecast points to a warmer than usual environment for these dates, so authorities recommend taking extreme precautions, especially during the central hours of the day. Among the main recommendations are avoiding prolonged sun exposure, staying well hydrated, and paying special attention to the elderly, minors, and vulnerable groups.
The pre-alert declaration is made in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), after analyzing the forecasts from AEMET and other available sources.
While in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the predicted highs will range between 30 and 32 degrees, in Gran Canaria up to 37 degrees could be reached in the midlands of the southeast, south, and west, as well as in the Tejeda basin. In Tenerife and La Gomera, temperatures could exceed 34 degrees starting Tuesday in the southern and western midlands.
